Pet liability

Liability protection if your pet injures someone or damages their property—usually via homeowners or renters personal liability.

Plain definition

Pet liability refers to third-party claims arising from your animal. On many homeowners and renters policies, personal liability may respond subject to breed restrictions, exclusions, and limits. Standalone animal liability products exist when personal policies exclude the animal.

Why it matters

Dog-bite claims can be costly. Landlords often require renters liability proof when pets are allowed. Confusing this with pet health insurance leaves the wrong gap covered.

Example

A guest is bitten in your apartment. Your renters personal liability may respond up to the limit if the dog is not excluded—while pet health insurance would address the dog’s own injuries, not the guest’s claim.

Common misunderstanding

Pet liability is not veterinary insurance, and the landlord’s building policy does not automatically cover your bite exposure.
