Personal liability (home/renters)
Coverage that may help when you are legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property.
Plain definition
Personal liability on homeowners or renters policies responds to covered claims where you are liable for bodily injury or property damage to others—often guest injuries, dog bites where not excluded, or accidental damage you cause off premises, subject to policy limits and exclusions.
Why it matters
Home and renters liability limits are often $100,000–$300,000 by default. Serious guest injuries can push you toward umbrella layers or personal assets.
Example
Your dog bites a guest who needs stitches. Personal liability may pay covered medical and liability amounts up to your limit if the breed is not excluded.
Common misunderstanding
Personal liability does not cover intentional harm or business activities run from home without proper endorsements or commercial coverage.
