Other structures (Coverage B)

Home policy limit for detached garages, fences, sheds, and similar structures.

Plain definition

Other structures coverage (Coverage B) applies to property separated from the main dwelling by clear space or connected only by fence or utility line—detached garage, guest house, pool equipment shed. Limits are often a percentage of dwelling coverage unless increased.

Why it matters

A detached garage fire can exceed default 10% of Coverage A if you store expensive tools or finished space there.

Example

Lightning ignites a detached workshop. Coverage B pays up to its limit for covered damage to that building, not Coverage A.

Common misunderstanding

Built-in attached structures belong to Coverage A, not B—misclassification affects which limit applies.
