Dwelling coverage (Coverage A)
Homeowners limit for the structure itself—walls, roof, built-in systems.
Plain definition
Dwelling coverage (Coverage A) insures the main home structure for covered perils up to the limit shown on the declarations page. It typically includes attached garages and built-in appliances, but not land, landscaping, or detached structures covered elsewhere.
Why it matters
Underinsuring Coverage A invites coinsurance penalties and leaves rebuild costs uncovered when construction prices spike.
Example
A windstorm tears off the roof. Dwelling coverage pays covered structural repairs minus deductible, subject to replacement cost or ACV terms.
Common misunderstanding
Market value of the house is not the same as dwelling limit—you insure rebuild cost, not sale price minus land.
