Named driver exclusion
Policy endorsement stating a specific person is not covered when driving listed vehicles.
Plain definition
A named driver exclusion removes coverage for a particular individual—often a household member with a poor driving record—when they operate vehicles on the policy. If they drive and cause a loss, the insurer may deny the claim for that driver’s use.
Why it matters
Exclusions can lower premium but create catastrophic uninsured exposure if the excluded person drives anyway, including permissive use disputes.
Example
A parent excludes a high-risk adult child to afford premium. The child borrows the car and crashes; the carrier may deny based on the exclusion.
Common misunderstanding
Excluding someone does not guarantee they are legal to drive without insurance elsewhere. State financial responsibility laws still apply.
