Underwriting
The process of evaluating risk and deciding whether and how to offer coverage.
Plain definition
Underwriting is how insurers decide to accept, decline, or modify coverage and at what premium. It uses applications, motor vehicle reports, claims history, property inspections, and other data allowed by law and filed rating plans.
Why it matters
Educational calculators mimic a few underwriting factors; real underwriting can add surcharges, exclusions, or declinations you will not see in a blog average.
Example
After a DUI, underwriting may place you in a non-standard auto market with higher rates and different payment plans—even if your prior premium was low.
Common misunderstanding
Underwriting is not a one-time event. Renewals re-underwrite using updated data; that is one reason premiums change without a claim.
