Plain definition

A binder is a short-term agreement confirming coverage limits and effective dates while the carrier finishes underwriting and prints the policy. Binders expire on a set date or when the policy replaces them—whichever comes first.

Why it matters

Lenders and DMVs often accept binders as proof, but binders can differ from the final policy if underwriting changes terms.

Example

You buy a home and the agent issues a 30-day homeowners binder so closing proceeds; the formal policy arrives two weeks later with matching limits.

Common misunderstanding

A binder is not a permanent substitute for the dec page. Always confirm the issued policy matches what you thought you bought.
