Endorsement
A policy amendment that adds, removes, or changes coverage.
Plain definition
An endorsement (rider on some life policies) modifies the base policy—adding scheduled jewelry, changing deductibles, excluding a driver, or extending water backup coverage. Endorsements become part of the contract when attached and billed.
Why it matters
Two policies with the same carrier name can behave differently because of endorsements. Renewals often add or drop endorsements without a big premium headline change.
Example
You add a home office endorsement so business property stored at home has stated limits; without it, business property may be limited or excluded.
Common misunderstanding
Verbal promises from an agent are not endorsements. If it is not in the issued policy packet, assume it is not covered.
