Water backup of sewers and drains is a homeowners endorsement bundling sewer backup and sometimes sump pump failure when water enters the home through the plumbing system. Limits are often $5,000–$25,000 unless increased.
Why it matters
Without the endorsement, insurers may classify basement water as excluded groundwater or maintenance, leaving you with full remediation cost.
Example
Your sump pump fails during a downpour and water rises through the floor drain. Water backup coverage may respond if pump failure is a covered trigger in your form.
Common misunderstanding
Maintaining the sump pump is still your job—neglect exclusions can apply even with the endorsement.
