Sewer backup

Water damage when sewers or drains back up into the home—usually needs an endorsement.

Plain definition

Sewer backup coverage pays for damage when wastewater flows into the home through pipes and drains, often from overwhelmed municipal systems or sump failure combinations. Standard homeowners policies typically exclude or severely limit this peril without a water backup endorsement.

Why it matters

Finished basements and stored belongings are vulnerable in heavy rain regions; cleanup and drywall replacement is expensive and smelly.

Example

A storm overloads the city sewer; sewage enters your basement bathroom. A sewer backup endorsement may pay mitigation and repairs up to its sublimit.

Common misunderstanding

Sewer backup is not the same as flood insurance from rising surface water—each needs its own trigger and policy.
