Waiver of premium
Life rider that continues coverage without premium if the insured becomes totally disabled.
Plain definition
Waiver of premium riders waive life insurance premiums after a waiting period when the insured meets the rider’s definition of total disability—often strict compared to Social Security disability. Coverage stays in force while the waiver applies, subject to rider age limits.
Why it matters
Disability without income makes life premiums hard to pay; waiver prevents lapse—but only if you qualify under medical and occupation tests in the rider.
Example
A surgeon loses use of both hands and meets rider disability tests after six months. Premiums waive; death benefit remains as long as disability continues per rider terms.
Common misunderstanding
Short-term injury or partial disability usually does not trigger waiver of premium without meeting total disability definitions.
