Lapse

When a policy terminates because premium was not paid or conditions were not met.

Plain definition

A lapse is the end of coverage—often after grace expires or a cancellation notice period ends. Reinstatement may require new underwriting, back premiums, and evidence of insurability, especially on life policies.

Why it matters

A lapse leaves you uninsured and can trigger higher rates, SR-22 complications, or loan collateral problems when insurance was required.

Example

Auto insurance lapses mid-term; you drive uninsured until reinstatement. An accident during that gap has no carrier defense.

Common misunderstanding

Canceling automatic payments without telling the carrier still leads to lapse. Non-payment cancellation is not the same as a flat cancel from the start.
