Plain definition

Replacement cost coverage pays to repair or replace damaged property with materials of similar kind and quality, without subtracting depreciation—subject to limits, endorsements, and conditions like repair within a time window or actual replacement.

Why it matters

Replacement cost narrows the out-of-pocket gap after a loss, but it usually costs more premium and may require you to actually replace items to receive full replacement payments.

Example

After a kitchen fire, replacement cost on contents might pay $8,000 for new cabinets and appliances if you replace them within the period stated in the policy; ACV on the same loss might pay far less.

Common misunderstanding

Replacement cost does not mean “unlimited upgrade.” Policies cap payouts at stated limits and may pay ACV first, then supplemental replacement cost after you replace.
