Named insured
The person or entity the policy contract primarily covers—listed on the declarations page.
Plain definition
The named insured is the primary party on the policy—usually the owner of the auto or the homeowner or renter who signed the application. The named insured typically has the broadest rights and duties under the contract, including premium payment and cancellation requests.
Why it matters
Roommates, adult children, and LLC-owned vehicles may not be covered unless properly listed. Mortgagees and additional insureds have different rights than the named insured.
Example
Two roommates share an apartment, but only one is named insured on renters insurance. The other’s belongings may have no coverage unless added or separately insured.
Common misunderstanding
Being on the lease is not the same as being a named insured on the policy. The dec page controls.
