Some states allow insurers to sell auto policies only after you sign a written rejection of UM, UIM, or both. That form is not boilerplate—it removes a coverage layer to lower premium.

Before you sign away UM/UIM

  1. Compare premium savings to the medical and wage exposure you carry
  2. Check whether health insurance alone would cover crash injuries (deductibles, networks, subrogation)
  3. Ask what UM/UIM limits would cost if you kept them
  4. Store the signed rejection with your policy PDFs

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I sign a UM rejection form?+

You may lose access to uninsured or underinsured motorist benefits you would otherwise have been offered—depending on state rules and which coverages you rejected.

Can I add UM back mid-term?+

Often yes, but some states treat reinstatement differently. Ask for a new dec page showing UM/UIM limits after any change.
