Leasing shifts total-loss risk toward the lessor’s payoff math. GAP on a lease is often about making sure a totaled car does not leave you paying the difference between insurance settlement and what the lease says you owe.

Lease GAP checklist

  1. Does the lease require GAP or a lessor waiver product?
  2. Is GAP bundled in the payment or sold separately?
  3. What is the maximum GAP benefit cap?
  4. Who initiates the claim—you, dealer, or lessor?
  5. If you terminate early, is unused GAP refundable?

Compare lessor-offered products to GAP from your auto insurer when allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Do lease contracts require GAP?+

Is lease GAP different from loan GAP?+

Conceptually similar—address shortfall after total loss—but lease contracts add termination fees, wear charges, and different payoff math. Read lease-end sections too.
