Rental car coverage checker (personal policy vs CDW)

Before you accept or decline coverage at the rental counter, map what your personal auto policy, credit card, and desk products might each do. This checker is a question list—not a quote or bindable waiver.

Direct answer: Personal auto policies often extend liability (and sometimes physical damage) to short-term rentals in the U.S., but wording varies. Desk CDW/LDW and card benefits are separate layers with their own exclusions—overlap is common and expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool sell rental car insurance?+

No. PolicyPlain is educational only. It does not price, bind, or sell rental waivers or auto policies.

Should I always buy CDW at the counter?+

Not necessarily. Some drivers already have overlapping protection through comp/collision or a qualifying credit card—but only if they meet that product’s rules. Confirm in writing with your insurer and card issuer.

Is credit card rental coverage the same as insurance?+

Usually it is a card benefit with its own limits, vehicle exclusions, and claim steps—not a substitute for reading your personal auto policy.
