Waiting period

Time after a policy starts before certain coverages or benefits begin.

Plain definition

A waiting period is a defined interval before coverage or benefits apply—common on disability income, short-term health-style products, and sometimes flood or pet policies. Life policies may have suicide waiting periods; home policies may delay coverage for certain risks after bind.

Why it matters

Buying coverage the day before a known procedure or storm may leave you uninsured for that event if a waiting period applies.

Example

A disability policy has a 90-day elimination period before monthly benefits pay. You must survive financially through that gap after a qualifying disability.

Common misunderstanding

Waiting period is not the same as a deductible. It is time-based eligibility, not a dollar amount you pay on each claim.
