Property damage liability

Auto coverage that can pay when you damage someone else’s property in a crash you caused.

Plain definition

Property damage (PD) liability pays to repair or replace another party’s vehicle, fence, or other property when you are legally liable, up to the PD limit shown on the declarations page. Defense costs may erode the limit depending on policy wording.

Why it matters

A single luxury vehicle or commercial storefront can exceed low PD minimums—especially in states with relatively low PD floors.

Example

You slide on ice into a parked truck totaling $45,000. PD liability pays up to your limit; you may owe the remainder if limits are lower.

Common misunderstanding

PD liability does not fix your car—that is collision or UM property damage where available.
