Plain definition

Medical payments (MedPay) coverage on auto policies pays reasonable medical expenses for you and occupants after an accident, up to a small limit, regardless of fault in many states. It is narrower than PIP and does not usually replace wage loss or essential services benefits that PIP may include.

Why it matters

MedPay can cover copays and deductibles when health insurance is primary, or provide a quick layer when you carry high-deductible health plans.

Example

You have $5,000 MedPay and a $3,000 health deductible. Covered ER bills from a fender bender may be paid through MedPay first, depending on coordination rules.

Common misunderstanding

MedPay limits are modest—$1,000 to $10,000 is common—so serious injuries still need health insurance, BI from at-fault parties, or UM/UIM.
