Plain definition

Inland marine insurance covers property that moves or does not fit standard building policies—contractor tools, cameras, fine art in transit, or bailee goods. Despite the name, it is primarily land-based commercial property coverage with broader perils than many standard commercial property forms.

Why it matters

Tools stolen from a job site or equipment damaged in a covered loss may fall outside a basic BOP property limit without a floater or inland marine schedule.

Example

A photographer schedules $40,000 of gear on an inland marine policy. Theft from a locked car at a wedding may pay up to scheduled limits if covered.

Common misunderstanding

Inland marine is not ocean marine for shipping containers—it is the commercial line for movable and floater risks on land.
