Cyber liability

Coverage for data breaches, ransomware, and related legal and notification costs.

Plain definition

Cyber liability insurance helps with breach response—forensics, customer notification, credit monitoring, regulatory fines where insurable, and liability to third parties whose data you held. Policies vary on social engineering fraud, business income from cyber events, and retroactive dates on claims-made forms.

Why it matters

Small businesses store customer emails and payment data. One ransomware event can exceed IT budgets without cyber coverage or incident plan.

Example

A phishing attack encrypts your CRM. Cyber coverage may pay negotiator fees, restoration, and legal review within sublimits and retentions.

Common misunderstanding

General liability property damage often excludes electronic data. Cyber is a separate purchase with its own exclusions for unpatched systems.
