SME liability ideas across EU & UK markets

Direct answer: Personal motor and household policies often exclude business activity. Small traders usually need separate liability (and sometimes employers’ liability) matched to how they actually work.

Educational only. PolicyPlain does not sell insurance and does not provide insurance, legal, or financial advice. Coverage rules and prices vary by country and insurer—confirm with your national supervisor. Read our full disclaimer.

Public / business liability

Names differ (Betriebshaftpflicht, RC professionnelle, public liability, OC działalności), but the job is similar: injury or property damage to others arising from your trade. Confirm whether advice errors need a professional-indemnity style product instead.

Employers’ duties

If you have employees, many markets impose compulsory or strongly expected employers’ liability. Do not assume a private policy covers staff injury at work—verify with your supervisor and contract.

Vehicles and tools

Deliveries, client visits, and tools in a van are frequent claim disputes when only private motor cover exists. Declare business use and ask about tools/equipment floaters where relevant.

What PolicyPlain will not do

We do not broker commercial programmes, certificate insurance for tenders, or price local premiums. Use country pages and licensed advisers for bindable cover.

FAQ

Does private car insurance cover business deliveries?
Often no—or only limited social-domestic-pleasure use. Commercial use usually needs the right class of cover. Check the schedule before you deliver goods for pay.
Is employers’ liability compulsory everywhere in the EU?
Rules differ by country and by whether you have employees. Treat it as a local compliance check—not a single EU-wide checkbox on this site.
