Is GAP insurance worth it for your loan?

A simple way to decide: compare what you owe, what the car is worth, what GAP costs, and what the contract actually covers.

GAP is worth a close look when you have real negative equity—and less interesting when you don’t. Run the loan math before you nod yes at the finance desk.

Use this page with the interactive GAP tool. Educational only.

The gap in one sequence

  1. You finance or lease a vehicle
  2. A covered total loss occurs
  3. Primary auto coverage pays actual cash value (minus deductible and adjustments)
  4. If you still owe more than that settlement, the difference is the exposure GAP products try to address

Factors that usually increase GAP relevance

  • Little or no down payment
  • Long loan terms
  • Rolled-in negative equity
  • Rapid early depreciation
  • High interest cost that keeps payoff elevated

Factors that often reduce GAP relevance

  • Large down payment / equity already positive
  • Short remaining term
  • Lease with different contractual protections (read the lease)
  • Very expensive GAP relative to remaining gap size

Dealer vs insurer vs lender products

Ask in writing:

  • Maximum benefit and any percentage caps
  • What happens if you pay off early or refinance
  • Exclusions (rideshare, modifications, delayed reporting)
  • Whether premiums are financed into the loan (raising interest cost)

Checklist before you say yes or no

  1. Estimate current payoff vs rough ACV
  2. Run the GAP worth-it tool
  3. Compare dealer contract vs adding GAP through an insurer (if available)
  4. Check refund rules
  5. Revisit after a large principal payment

Frequently asked questions

When is GAP most often discussed?+

When a vehicle is financed or leased with small down payment, long terms, or negative equity rolled in—situations where loan balance can exceed actual cash value after a total loss.

Is dealer GAP the same as insurer GAP?+

Not always. Products differ in caps, exclusions, refunds, and whether they are insurance or waiver products. Compare contracts line by line.

Does GAP replace collision?+

No. Collision/comprehensive respond to the vehicle loss (minus deductible). GAP addresses a financing shortfall after the primary settlement, subject to terms.
